Scaling & Polishing (Oral Prophylaxis)

What is Scaling, Polishing, and Oral Prophylaxis?
Scaling and polishing, also known as oral prophylaxis, is a preventive dental procedure designed to maintain the health of your teeth and gums.

  • Scaling involves removing plaque, tartar (also known as calculus), and bacterial deposits that cannot be eliminated by regular brushing and flossing. These hardened deposits are the leading cause of gum disease, cavities, and persistent bad breath.

  • Polishing follows scaling and smoothens the surface of your teeth. This procedure removes minor stains, makes it harder for plaque to stick again, and gives your teeth a cleaner, shinier look.

Oral prophylaxis is the combined process of scaling and polishing, aimed at preventing gum disease, tooth decay, and maintaining overall oral hygiene.

When is Scaling & Polishing Needed?
You may need oral prophylaxis if you experience:

  • Yellow or brown stains on teeth

  • Bleeding gums while brushing

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Tartar buildup along the gumline

  • Swollen or receding gums

Even if you do not have visible issues, regular prophylaxis is recommended to prevent problems before they start.

What Happens During the Procedure?
At Tara Shine Dental clinic in Ameerpet, the procedure is simple, safe, and painless (usually takes 30 to 45 minutes):

  1. Examination – The dentist evaluates your teeth and gums.

  2. Scaling – Ultrasonic scalers and fine instruments are used to remove plaque and tartar deposits gently.

  3. Polishing – A polishing paste is applied with a rotating brush to smooth tooth surfaces and remove stains.

  4. Fluoride or mouth rinse – Sometimes recommended for added protection.

How Often is it Needed?
Most patients benefit from scaling and polishing every 6 months. However, individuals with gum disease, smoking habits, or higher tartar buildup may require it every 3–4 months.
